This tournament is an individual/team tournament. It will have the following divisions:

  • Primary A, B, C (potentially D)

Divisions are based on ability level. The lowest Primary division will be restricted to students in Prep to Grade 2, pending individual circumstances. Teams will consist of a maximum of 4 players — however, partial teams are accepted into the event.

2026 Gold Coast Junior Championships

One of the biggest events on the junior calendar is the Gold Coast Junior Championships. This event is split into three different divisions with Under 8, Under 10 and Under 12-18 sections.

Will anybody be able to win both their age group in the Gold Coast Juniors and then back it up in the Queensland Juniors?

Under 8 – Saturday 20th June – QJ Rated

Under 10 – Sunday 21st June – QJ Rated

Under 12-18 – Both days! (Players in this division must be members of the Chess Association of Queensland to participate) – ACF and QJ Rated

Gardiner Chess is proud to be able to present the 2026 Queensland Junior Chess Championships. This prestigious event brings together the top junior players in Queensland to battle it out across 8 rounds of competition to see who will be crowned the State Champion.

  • When: Tuesday 30th June to Friday 3rd July
  • Where: Anglican Church Grammar (Churchie).
    • Under 18: Morris Hall
    • Under 8/10/12: Viking Cafe Classrooms
  • Who: For players who turn the age of the tournament, or are younger in the given year (e.g. Under 8 players need to be born in 2018 or later)
  • What: 8 round Swiss format
  • Time Control:
    • Under 18 – 90 minutes + 30 seconds per move
    • Under 12 – 60 minutes + 10 seconds per move
    • Under 10 – 25 minutes + 10 seconds per move
    • Under 8 – 15 minutes + 10 seconds per move
  • Cost: No Entries will be accepted on the day

It is a requirement of entry that all players are CAQ financial members. Please see here to join / check your membership.

Other Information:

  • The playing area is reserved for players, arbiters, and approved guests.
  • Parents are responsible for the supervision of their children in all external areas.
  • There will be an analysis room available for all players.
  • There will be a room available for parents as well – under Viking Cafe Classrooms
  • There is an onsite cafe which will be open the majority of the time.
  • No food is to be brought into the library.
  • There are multiple areas outside of the library to sit and enjoy the fresh air.
  • All participants, parents, and spectators are bound by the Chess Association Code of Conduct as well as the Gardiner Chess policies.
  • Any hostility towards staff will not be tolerated and may lead to removal from events, reporting to CAQ and ongoing bans.

2026 Term 3 – Brisbane South Secondary Interschool Tournament

Welcome to the 2026 Term 3 Brisbane South Secondary Zone Interschool Competition

When: Tuesday 4th August
Where: Anglican Church Grammar School (East Brisbane)
Who: Secondary Students
Time: Registration from 8.30am to 9.15am. Start at 9.30am and finish around 2.15pm (allow to 2.30pm to be safe)
Cost: $25.00 per player, invoiced to the school post event.

This event will have multiple divisions. Please ensure registration is done either via the website link or by sending an excel spreadsheet to [email protected] no later than Friday 31st Jul

As always, if anyone is sick, we please ask them to stay away from the event where possible.

Medals will be awarded for 1st to 3rd teams and 1st to 3rd individuals in each division, with merit ribbons to those individuals scoring 4.5/7 or higher.

Invoices will be sent to schools after the event takes place. Please ensure that you have have read all the relevant policies and procedures below before entering the event.
